Can I transfer my site from another web host? Will there be any downtime?

Sure, and we can even help out. Web Hosting Canada can host your site and will even take the necessary steps to avoid any downtime during the transfer. In order to do this, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Order the web hosting package that best suits your needs, while making sure you've selected the "transfer" option.
  2. Wait for our confirmation e-mail containing all the connection details.
  3. Connect to our servers by FTP, using the IP address or host name we sent you.
  4. Upload all your files in the "public_html" directory, and change the name of your home page file to "index.html" (and update your links if necessary!).
  5. If your domain name is registered with another registrar, tell them to change your DNS nameservers to the ones specified in your welcome email (or do it yourself using their members interface). If you also transferred your domain name to us, you can update your DNS to ours via the Client Hub.

If needed, we can perform this transfer for you at a modest cost of $50.00 CAD. This includes the transfer of all your files (max 1 GB) and one database (if needed). We won't start modifying your scripts or updating your links though, but if any of that becomes necessary we'll let you know. Contact us for more details or just make a note of it when placing your order and pay the additional fees using our direct payment form.

What are the technical specifications of your servers?
Web Hosting Canada uses only high-end web servers.
What are your web hosting rates?
Our rates vary depending on the hosting package you choose. You can compare our offers on our web hosting comparison page. Prices might also vary slightly based on the length of the contract. If you have specific needs please contact us. We can also arrange certain discounts for high-volume purchases.
Are there any additional fees?

The following additional fees may apply:

  • There are additional processing fees of $20.00 for payments less than 50$ made by check or through Western Union.
  • There are 15$ processing fees for international wire transfers to cover transaction fees withheld by our bank
  • Canadian residents are subject to a 5% tax (GST)
  • Quebec residents are subject to a 7.5% tax (PST)

There are no "hidden" fees.

Will you be showing any advertisements or pop-ups on my site?
No, we hate pop-ups just as much as you do. Besides, it's your website; you should be the sole judge as to what you display on it. But since we're on this subject, if you're currently a member and like our service, why not add a link to our website? It would be appreciated.
How can I renew my hosting contract?
Depending on your specific contract, you will either have your contract renewed and your credit card charged automatically for another year, or you'll receive an e-mail containing all the instructions you'll need to renew 30 days before the contract expires.
Do you offer an administrative interface?
Yes, we offer a cPanel with all our hosting packages. It's a slick, intuitive interface that automates the most common tasks. You'll also have access to a powerful and intuitive Site Builder with over 800 professional site templates.
How can I upload/publish my files?
You have several choices, including FTP uploads, Site Builder, FrontPage, or the cPanel File Manager. The technical details as well as step-by-step procedures are explained in our Client Area.

Can I use FrontPage to create and publish my website?
You sure can. FrontPage 2000/XP/2003 is supported.
What do bandwidth and disk space mean?

Bandwidth (or monthly transfer) is a metric measuring the usage level of your website. It is calculated on a monthly basis, in Mega-bytes (Mb). Every time someone downloads a 1 Mb file, it consumes 1 Mb of bandwidth. If you are given 1000 Mb of bandwidth per month, it means a 1 Mb file will be downloaded 1000 times before your quota is exceeded. When calculating bandwidth usage, everything being uploaded, downloaded and emailed is taken into consideration. Disk space, on the other hand, represents the amount of data currently stored on our servers (also usually calculated in Mb). When you double your bandwidth, you're allowing your visitors to download twice as much content from your website each month, and by doubling your disk space you become entitled to store twice as much content on your web site.

Top of page

What happens when I exceed my monthly bandwidth quota?
As soon as you exceed your monthly quota, your web site is suspended and your visitors are shown a "Bandwidth exceeded" page. You can unsuspend your account by upgrading to a hosting package with more bandwidth or by waiting till the 1st of the next month, when your bandwidth counter is reset to zero. Your bandwidth usage is shown in your cPanel, on the left of the main page when you log in. You're also emailed a warning when you hit 75% of your bandwidth quota during any given month.
What happens when I exceed my disk space quota?

You actually can't exceed your disk quota, since our systems will prevent you from doing so. When you've reached your disk space limit no further uploads will be permitted. Make sure to always leave a minimum of 5 Mb of available disk space on your account or else emails being sent to you will start bouncing back. You can remove your disk space limitation at any time by upgrading to a superior hosting package.

Do you host websites with adult content?
No, sorry.
Can I upgrade my hosting package at any time? If so, how?

You can upgrade anytime, and you'll only have to pay the pricing difference between your current and new hosting package. Please contact us and we will provide you with an exact price.

How can I transfer my domain name from another registrar?

Before transferring your domain name, make sure that:

  • You're the legal owner of the domain name, or you have the owner's permission to transfer it on their behalf.
  • You have access to the email address registered for the domain. You can check what address is registered for a particular domain name by performing a whois query on that domain (enter your domain name in the "name spinner" field).
  • Contact your current domain registrar (or use their online interface) in order to remove the "registrar lock", which prevents unauthorized domain transfers. You can check if your domain name currently has a registrar lock by performing a whois query on that domain (if there is a lock, you'll see the following line in the result: "Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK"). We cannot transfer a domain name until the registrar lock is removed. It is every registrar's legal obligation to remove a lock as soon as notified by their clients.
  • Obtain your domain name's transfer key (also called the EPP key), which is a code required for us to initiate any domain name transfer. Your current registrar will be able to provide this key upon request. Note: .ca domains do not require EPP transfer keys.

Once that's done, follow these steps:

  1. Complete our order form, making sure that you select the transfer option and that you specify the domain name being transferred
  2. In the appropriate field, enter your EPP key (not needed for .ca domains).
  3. If you wish to purchase the WHOIS Privacy service, click the checkbox next to the service, otherwise leave unchecked
  4. If you wish to specify different name servers, change them now, otherwise leave unchanged.
  5. Complete the payment using your preferred payment method.
  6. Authorize the domain transfer by following the instructions in the email you will receive either from the appropriate domain name registration institution or from your current registrar, a few hours after your order.
  7. Once the transfer is authorized, wait for your domain to be transferred (expect a delay of up to 7 days)
How much does a domain name cost?
Prices vary depending on the TLD (extension) chosen. In general, .ca domains are pricier due to the higher fees demanded by CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Agency). Rates are listed on our domain names page. Contact us if you wish to negotiate pricing for a higher-volume purchase (10+ domains).
How do I order a domain name?

Go to our domain name registration page and make sure the domain name you want isn't already taken. You can register a domain name with a .ca, .com, .org, .net, .biz and .info extensions.

Once you have found an available name that is to your liking, complete our order form and make the necessary payment. Your site will be registered and available within 48 hours, at which point you shall receive an email providing you with additional details about your account and requesting more information, if needed.

Special procedure for Canadian (.ca) domain registrations: upon registering, you will receive an email asking you to create an account with CIRA, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. You must register with them within one week of ordering your domain otherwise your application will automatically be refused.

Please note that registering a domain name does not confer any special legal rights; you should consider registering a trademark if needed.

What IS a domain name?
A domain name is a unique series of alphanumeric strings separated by periods, such as www.mywebhostingcanada.ca, that is an address of a computer network connection and that identifies the owner of the address. Domain names are used to translate complex IP addresses into more readable and easy-to-remember words, so that your clients can have an easier time finding you on the internet.
What are the terms and conditions for Canadian (.ca) domain name purchases?
The conditions are complex, but basically they state that in order to register a .ca domain, you must be a Canadian resident or citizen, or have an organization that is officially registered in a Canadian province or territory. The complete conditions are available on the CIRA website.
Can I register provincial domain names, like qc.ca?
Yes! Contact us and let us know which domain you would need and we'll register it for you.
Can I link my domain name with my home Videotron/Sympatico/Rogers Internet account?
It's possible, but discouraged since these providers usually make it a point not to allow such capabilities on their basic Internet plans. Contact us for details.
How do I place an order, and what happens after?
  1. Choose the hosting package and/or domain name you wish to order.
  2. Fill out the online order form.
  3. Complete the secure payment.
  4. Wait for a confirmation & welcome email from us. This should be sent out within 24 hours of your initial order, and will contain the necessary information for you to connect to the server.
  5. Once your domain name has been propagated on the Internet (a process that may take up to 48 hours), you'll be able to easily connect to your cPanel, transfer files over FTP, and access your website using your domain name.
